Selling Things That Never End

·

I pretty much moved to offering subscription only products and services. I’ve got newsletters (here and here), and I’ve got advice and actually MAKING STUFF.

I’ve found this structure to be much better for me and the people I work with.

First, this type of offering (every week or every month!) scares away almost all of the people who do absolutely nothing. I don’t make any big promises about overnight success so all of the people who believe in that have go somewhere else to get their dopamine receptors firing.

If the wrong person buys one of my subscriptions, the very act of me showing up, over and over, becomes an annoyance that will remind them of everything they could be doing but aren’t. They’ll either quit, which will save them money, or maybe (less likely) go on to DO SOMETHING.

If the right person buys a subscription that I offer, then I get to provide ongoing advice, focus, guidance, inspiration and clarity over a much longer period of time. That’s really what it takes because we’re not sprinting here. We are in the marathon business.

For private clients, this allows me to stop guessing with what I make (marketing resources, lead generation systems, sales systems etc.) and actually get accurate information from the marketplace, over time, to build something that works.

When your expectations are off about HOW LONG ALL OF THIS TAKES, about how long it takes to build something that matters, it’s easy to get frustrated.

If you get into a rhythm though, you can shift the feeling. You get the wheel spinning and then keep it spinning. It’s hard at the beginning and easier the longer you go.

The key is to not get too caught up with the goal you want to achieve. Keep the focus on the NOW. That’s where you can actually DO something to make that future you want a reality.
