Too many businesses struggle, not because the owner doesn’t have what it takes, but because the business aims high level skills at low level opportunities.
I heard this years ago and my experience helping business owners over the last 20+ years shows it to be true.
Too many businesses aren’t seeing success because they are pursuing opportunities that are not worthy of their life.
You end up feeling like you are the problem, but that’s not the truth. The truth is that you just haven’t structured things so that your skills can create the success you want.
Two of the most powerful leverage points in a business are:
- Exactly who you choose to serve.
- The exact problem you choose to solve for those people.
I can choose to help massage therapists become trusted advisors to their clients. If a 90 minute massage averages $150, and through our work together, we get the annual revenue of that micro-business from $150,000 to $300,000, I could charge a portion of that value and be satisfied that I helped to change a life.
Or…
I could choose a business selling software to dental offices at about $100,000 per client per year, help THAT business grow from 3 guys in a basement to 70 employees doing millions, and provide a level of value to the marketplace that far exceeds the $150,000 increase I helped create for the massage therapist.
In real life, I chose option two. Because that’s a more valuable place to aim my skills. That business got so successful, it got acquired and made the owner a very wealthy guy. I’m the guy who powered the lead machine to help that happen.
Guess which business was willing, able, even happy to pay a much larger amount for my expertise?
- Be smart about the problem you choose to solve.
- Be smart about the people you choose for whom to solve it.
Right there, in those two decisions, you set the level of potential inside of a business.
How you structure those two things is what controls the opportunity you have to succeed.
Choose RIGHT and you have a chance.
Choose WRONG and you get to struggle.
