Avoiding the New Rat Race

There are no better sales than sales by discovery. That’s when THEY find YOU.

In order to find you, there needs to be something to find.

Right away it becomes clear why social media, as we have it today, gets you running in the opposite direction of that achievement.

The Matrix borg says, “Here slave, you can help us build our business while thinking we’re helping you build yours! Just spend all of your time on our platform creating the things that make people come. And once you’ve created a bunch of content, why don’t you wake up tomorrow and do it again? In exchange, we’ll offer you the promise of the opportunity for attention…maybe…if we feel like it…for a little…until we change our mind or decide to charge you for it or simply cancel your account and send you away forever.”

Social media robs you of your body of work. Because once that swipe moves your post/video/content from the screen, IT IS GONE. Lost in the sands of time. All that work… POOF.

THIS. IS. DUMB.

“But I post on LinkedIN!” say the business people.

This is not serious work. This is not effective. It’s effective for a FEW, which is what keeps everyone else going.

Where is your growing body of work that, if discovered by a prospective client, makes it EASY for them to sell themselves on you?

This is not a complicated question. It is very simple. Where’s the beef?

Some people write books. Some people make products. Some people use blogs (still!). Every day, I take this email and post it on my website. Duh.

When prospects come along, they can review years of material and immediately know if they should stick around or leave.

This is what a media platform gets you. It builds the body of work. Each day, week, month you publish, that publication gets repurposed and contributed to the growing pile of PROOF of your expertise and value.

Without a body of work, you are forced to chase transactions. Not only is this far less profitable, it just isn’t sustainable. You’ve only got energy for chasing for so long before it gets really old.

Your body of work builds attraction in the marketplace towards what you have. It doesn’t work overnight, but it does provide leverage over time.

With social media, the more you do it, the more you have to do it. It’s the New Rat Race!

When you build a body of work, the longer you do it, the less effort it takes to get a sale to happen.
