When Fear Keeps You Stuck

Humans seem not to like change.

  • What happens if it doesn’t work?
  • I’ve tried that before, I couldn’t do it.
  • What will they say if I fail?

I don’t know if I used to think like that. I don’t remember. It could possibly be a trauma survival mechanism clouding my memory, I don’t know.

Long ago, I burned everything in my work life down. I quit my last ever job and jumped into the world of business without knowing a thing. I actually knew less than nothing because there was a bunch of stuff I thought I knew that turned out not to be true.

I wouldn’t recommend this approach to most people. Most people are already scared to death. They think that reimagining their work/business life so it GIVES them energy (and money!) instead of ROBS them of energy is a risky move.

For a few, the “burn it all down” method it works. We see those people on YouTube and throughout social media telling their stories. “I made seven figures in 12 days!” Unfortunately, their story has nothing to do with your story.

For most, the slow and steady method works just fine! And you can sleep a lot better at night too.

What have I learned since going out on my own and (slowly) building a business in alignment with what I love?

I learned that life is too short to spend any amount of time doing something you don’t like for money. If it’s a job, if it’s a business, it doesn’t matter. Make the decision to get rid of it or change it and take control of your life like an adult. You have that power. And while it might not happen overnight, it CAN happen if you refuse to quit.

The other thing I learned is that many people would much rather endure the pain they know than face the darkness of the unknown. This is sad, and also common.

Yes, there are countless risks in the world of business. Some things work, many don’t. Even the things that work eventually might not, which means you have to reinvent again. And it never stops.

Risky business right? Maybe…

But what do you risk by not truly living? What do you risk by settling for being miserable?

Those are more powerful questions.
