Humans don’t scale. That’s why they retain their value.
If you have something that CAN scale, it’s a very different situation. The more of the thing you make, the greater the number of those things that exist, the more available they become, the less valuable and less special those things get.
So which way is the smart business owner supposed to go?
I don’t know. But I always go the “other” way. It’s a genetic flaw, or maybe a genetic enhancement. I’m not sure which. Whatever you want to call it, the result is that I tend to walk away from the herd even before I understand what that means about what I’m walking towards.
This is generally always a smart thing to do. Unless that means you’re walking into a burning building.
In business, we’re not dealing with matters of life and death so taking this risk seems acceptable.
Right now, the herd is running in the direction that is opposite of where meaning, depth, connection and everything that matters is found. And they seem really excited about it.
I’m walking the other way. I don’t care about scaling, I don’t care about crushing it, I don’t care about the glitz or the glam of the newest gizmo bot that means I don’t have to think.
When you don’t want to scale, alpha entrepreneurs look at you funny. They don’t invite you to parties and you don’t appear on their podcasts. You’re not exciting because you’re not chasing anything.
That means you’ve got a lot of time for coffee, tea, quiet contemplation and thinking in the way that produces value out of nothing.
- What do you want?
- How do you want your life to look?
- What makes you unique/special/useful?
- How do you want to serve?
Without the answers to those questions, how could you possibly know which way is the right way for you?
