I’ve been building client attraction systems for about 23 years.
When I started doing this work, my primary motivation was eating and staying alive. With stakes that high, you learn very quickly that “should work” is not the same as “does work.”
I remember buying a computer consultant’s “build your business” product years ago that came with tons of stuff I never used. Why? Because the feeling was wrong, it wasn’t for me, it wasn’t the way I was wired to do things.
So I made stuff up on my own. My first client attraction “system” (might be an exaggeration!) was showing up at a weekly networking meeting hoping something happened. Luckily, when you fix computers, there was always somebody who needed your help. I ate in spite of my own stupidity.
When I moved out of the technology world and started as a copywriting and marketing consultant, my client attraction system was simple:
I sent 200 hand addressed letters through the mail each month to newsletter publishers and gurus I knew hired copywriters. That first year, my revenue jumped about 4X. Those silly letters (they were embarrassing) made me feel like I had hit the jackpot. If you’re a man providing for your family, there’s no better feeling than that.
When I began to move out of the “copywriter” box and into the “making it rain” box, I realized there are basically three types of businesses when it comes to client attraction:
- Those that treat client attraction like hunting…
- Those that treat it like farming…
- Those that do a little bit of both…
There’s no right or wrong, there’s only what works and what doesn’t work…for YOU.
What works to attract a client willing to invest $240K in a service will not be the same as what works to bring in a new client for a chiropractor.
What I discovered is that client attraction is an art. It is a process that identifies qualified prospects, demonstrates the value you provide to the world, makes it clear how certain problems can be solved by your products and services, and does all of that in a way that BUILDS attraction to what you have.
Most importantly, I realized that, in client attraction, there is no such thing as a “paint by number” system.
That doesn’t mean there aren’t tons of those for sale! Just look around. So many promises just about everywhere you look.
I never found someone else’s system to be very effective. This is something that you want to put together just for you, based on your specific situation.
When you get it right, you know it. Because better clients come more often, more easily.
What should YOUR client attraction system look like? No one knows. That’s an answer that must be discovered.
Today I’m opening enrollment for a new “pilot program” to help a few people do just that.
You can get the details here. If you have questions about it, just let me know.
