The internet makes it possible for anyone to look like an expert.
All you really need is a big social media profile, some great photography, and the ability to sell a dream to a specific group of people.
Many times, that’s enough to get the sale. People buy what they want to believe, especially when it sounds easy and quick. Two things virtually every human likes.
“Give me the result without me having to do what’s normally required to get the result.”
This makes it challenging for your prospective buyers to make smart choices…to pick the true experts and not just the slick sellers. The human eye is attracted to a certain look. The human mind gets caught up in stories. We love promises of great return with little to no effort.
What do you do if this game isn’t a game you want to play? What if you’re one of those experts who isn’t here to be “cool?” What if the idea of endless self promotion makes you want to puke?
What if you actually have something that requires your buyers to become a better version of themselves? Something they have to work at? Something that takes time?
The simple answer is that you have to find another way.
The more complete answer is that you have to build a system for selling yourself that does not require you to play a game online that is designed for you to lose.
The reason the gurus’ systems don’t work for everyone is because they weren’t built for you.
You don’t buy a system for selling yourself, you build one based on your specific situation.
Selling Yourself isn’t about learning 51 ways to close a sale, it is about understanding the strategy behind how you should show up in the world, how you should collect attention, how you should nurture trust, how you should make your solutions available.
All of this strategy is informed and influenced by who you are, what you do, and the specific buyers you want to attract.
So there’s no silver bullet gizmo for getting this done. No push-button system for sales success. Some people say that’s what they have, but I’ve never seen it. Not for someone who wants to be a real expert. A trusted advisor. Someone who gets paid because of WHO THEY ARE.
For business owners who want to build a system like this, I created the strategic process to walk you through the steps. It’s called How to Sell Yourself. It requires both thinking and doing. Along the way, you’re sending in your homework/ideas for my review and feedback. At the end, we talk through the whole system, one-on-one, to make sure it’s clear. The process is slow, methodical, deep and calm.
In an age of low attention, high skepticism, and tons of noise, how you show up matters. How you speak about yourself matters. The pain points of your prospective buyers you focus on matters. Your mindset matters. ALL of this goes into building a system that brings prospective clients who are ready to buy.
If you’ve never experienced that happening, it’s a beautiful thing.
