No one ever told me, back when I was getting started, that it is far easier to start your own business than it is to get picked as an employee. (I can’t imagine what it’s like to play the employee game these days.)
Starting a business certainly didn’t seem easier from my perspective at that time. All you have to do in the job world is get one human to say, “We want him…” and then you’re set with a job! Salary, benefits, security baby! It’s great!
- Well, except for giving up control over most of your time…
- And except for having to work every day helping someone else get what they want instead of what you want…
- And except for replacing your true priorities with a new priority: not getting fired.
- And except for allowing the force influencing your daily conduct to be someone else’s dream instead of your own.
No one ever mentioned those downsides to me. So I didn’t know about them, until I got to live them.
The other thing no one ever mentioned were all of the benefits of going out on your own. This is a long list of other stuff I also didn’t know about going in but only discovered as I got to live them.
Things like…
- Using the natural human motivation of needing to EAT to make facing your fears a no-brainer.
- Learning the alchemical art of transforming NOTHING into real value that other humans will pay for.
- Proving to yourself (eventually) that you might just actually be valuable.
- Getting to work through all of your deep-seated emotional issues that stand as obstacles on your road to success.
- The opportunity to align every area of your life with what you truly desire.
- Realizing that every other human you know is just MAKING IT ALL UP and that you have the authority to do that too.
Independence is scary when you were raised to be a sheep. I know. But it was only scary because no one ever taught me how to develop the capacity for holding the amount of power that INDEPENDENCE offers. It is a heavy load to carry. Heavy because it is laced with self-responsibility and unlimited possibility, two of the most powerful forces on the planet.
These days I don’t feel scared when it comes to independence. I now recognize that feeling as LIFE. It is the vibration of limitless potential that I get to meet each and every morning. It is the reminder that I am the artist, that my life is waiting to be painted and that there is only one person qualified for that job.
