Curing My Spinelessitis

When you give up needing to be liked and put all your focus on being effective, your daily experience of life changes pretty dramatically.

I was raised to make decisions for maximum social acceptance. I practiced that approach for many decades. It led to misery, fear, limited achievement, confusion and lack of direction.

It also developed into an acute case of Spinelessitis, which is a rare and deadly disease men get when they grow up without a spine. (I had to regrow mine.)

The net result of this disease, after many years of suffering, was a bizarre mixture of rage and impotence.

I wanted to burn everything down, but was too scared to do it. (Sometimes the Universe is funny.)

All of this changed when I stopped viewing clients as enemies and started viewing them as partners. I started caring more about achieving than I did about anything else.

I was surprised to discover humans really like it when you do this!

Whatever you choose to put your focus on, the worst possible choice is anything in and around the idea of whether or not people like you. That is irrelevant.

If you are useful, people tend to like you!

It’s easy to think business is complicated. Some parts of it aren’t.

It’s not about how big your audience is, it’s not about the size of your list, it’s not about attracting the attention of millions, it’s not about getting invited to the cool events.

It’s about making a real difference in someone else’s life.
