If you ask an elephant to climb a tree, you’re going to have a problem.
It’s a silly thing to suggest. Because no one would ever ask an elephant to climb a tree.
Unfortunately, we do this type of thing in business all the time.
We have something made for certain reasons try to do things it’s not made to do.
By the time most of us get to be adults, it’s a habit that’s hard to break. Teaching humans to be someone other than who they are is what school is for. Those who can’t or won’t comply get labels…some get poison drugs. The problem isn’t inherent to humans, it is manufactured on purpose.
The choice we have is this one:
BE YOU or SUFFER.
This doesn’t change when we walk into the business world.
Every business has a life force because every business is powered by humans.
The biggest challenge is to never try to make it something it is not.
What is your business? What is it NOT?
Those are some important questions.
The quickest way to get answers about this is to ask a guru. They always have an answer ready. It might not be the same answer they had 2 years ago, but you can bet the answer they give you today is the one that’s selling well.
So you can get quick results there. Unfortunately, chances are slim that they are right. Gurus aren’t generally in the business of customized answers because providing customized answers isn’t a model that scales. And things that don’t scale don’t excite those guys.
I’ve been doing this a long time. What I’ve discovered is that, the hardest part of business, without question, is figuring out which business you’re actually supposed to be in.
Oh, I know you say you do X, or Y or Z…but what business are you really IN? Is it the right one for you?
If you don’t know the answer to this question, then it’s really hard to make smart choices about all of the other things.
One way to get some real answers is to start identifying constraints. Can we find anything in this recipe that DOESN’T change? That’s NOT optional?
WHO YOU ARE is not optional. You can’t change it. You can ignore it, deny it, betray it, run away from it, even medicate it…but you can’t change it.
So… once you figure out that part, WHO YOU ARE, the next logical question could be:
What business would a person like that be IN?
How would a person like that operate this business?
What would this person do in the business? What would this person NOT do?
If you’re in a business that’s not right for you, there are probably clues all over the place. You might know exactly what they are. You can certainly FEEL it at some level.
DOING something about that is often hard. Because it forces us to trust ourselves over the voices of anyone and everyone else.
Most humans in the Matrix are not trained for that. But that is the way.
You don’t need proof. You don’t need experts. You don’t need studies or data or metrics of any kind.
You need the feeling that comes only when you know you are doing something that is right for you. The feeling you get when you know you are on your path.
Imagine if we were trained to trust that?
